Manual Samuel

Manual Samuel

You are Sam, son of a rich CEO and you don’t care about much at all. After a tragic accident you get a second shot at life, with one condition, for the next 24 hours you need to control all your bodily functions manually; breathing, blinking, moving each body part, chewing, swallowing, using the bathroom; everything. All the small things that you easily take care of everyday become a huge task for Sam; luckily he just has to last like this for 24 hours. The grim reaper (who you cut the deal with to get your life back) is alongside you in your journey, and he is “helping you out” in interesting ways. Stuff like changing your automatic car into a manual transmission. So now instead of just brake and accelerator, you need to worry about those plus a clutch and moving your hand from the wheel to the gear shift. Sounds like no big deal, but it is much harder than it sounds.

The controls are frustrating but that really is on purpose (I played with my keyboard, I wish I had played with a controller because to tell you the truth it probably would have been easier), you need to be constantly blinking and breathing while trying to do other things, but you are always doing that in real life. I think that is part of the point of the game, you forget the little things you do automatically all the time and this game reminds you of how awful it would be if you actually had to remember to do those things yourself all the time. It’s actually a good thing the game is so short because a Skyrim type of adventure where you had to constantly make your character blink and breathe would be infuriating.

Instead of puzzles or fighting or anything traditional; this game is really about trying to remember all the right buttons and then pressing them at the right moments. Thing is the controls aren’t always as responsive as they should be for a game that is really just about controls. Example, if you don’t push your buttons for walking in the right order, you will fall down. There are some places where you need to walk fast and if you don’t alternate right, you will fall and fail. I am quick on my keyboard from having gamed since videogames were invented and unfortunately that speed works against you. You can be too quick for this game, and if you are, you will fail. That gets frustrating; especially when the game wants you to be quick about things.

Overall this game was enjoyable, not too long and a truly original idea.

Was it fun?
TL;DR
A short but fun experience with an original concept, however if you frustrate easily do not pick this one up.
